What is a proctologist?

A proctologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the rectum and anus. These conditions may include ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, hemorrhoids, anal fissures, rectal prolapse, anal cancer, and other diseases of the colon and anus.

Proctologists may perform diagnostic tests such as endoscopy, colonoscopy, and sigmoidoscopy to evaluate the rectum and colon. They may also perform surgical procedures such as hemorrhoidectomy, anal fissure repair, and colorectal cancer surgery.

Proctologists typically complete specialized training in colorectal surgery and have a deep understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the anus and rectum. They work closely with other healthcare providers, including gastroenterologists, oncologists, and primary care physicians, to provide comprehensive care for patients.
